Sa Chen, the well-known Chinese pianist, will be giving 2 concerts during April. The first will be on Tuesday April 12, 2016 and Sa will be playing Debussy’s Préludes Books 1 and 2 (featuring all 24 préludes). On Wednesday April 13 Sa will play selections from Chopin Mazurkas followed by Liszt’s Sonata in B Minor.
Sa Chen was born in Chongquin and grew up in an artistic family. Her mother was a ballet dancer and her father a French horn player. She started her musical career by initially learning the violin (aged 6) and then the piano when she was 9. She first came to international fame when she was the youngest contestant (aged 16) at the Leeds International Piano Competition – she won the 4th. prize. A year later she received a full scholarship to study at the Guildhall School with Prof. Joan Havill. In 2005 Sa received the Crystal Award at the Van Cliburn competition.
Over the past 19 years Chen Sa has established herself as one of the most charismatic pianists of her generation. She has performed with many well-known orchestras including the London Philharmonic, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Royal Stockholm Philharmonic and with renowned conductors such as Sir Simon Rattle and Vasily Petrenko. Sa loves chamber music and collaborates with many great musicians. These include Gidon Kremer and Natalie Gutman. Sa has participated at prestigious festivals including the Schleswig Holstein, Lockenhaus and the Aix-en-Provence. Sa is also a Steinway Artist.
Sa is also involved in charity work. In 2007 she was invited by the World Bank and the Norwegian Government to premier the multimedia piano concerto Green Call in Beijing as part of an environmental protection program. She also performs for students with partial hearing loss at special schools in China.
Sa has recorded many albums. Her latest album, “Memories Lost”, featuring modern Chinese compositions, has been released worldwide and was described by the BBC Music Magazine as “the most interesting and successful recording of new Chinese music”. Amigos’ de Música concerts at Os Agostos begin at 7.00pm sharp. Doors open at 6.00pm and wine, fruit juices and canapés will be served. Entry donation is €25 per person for guests and non-members.
The AMIGOS DE MÚSICA is an international group of around 95 members who stage musical activities by internationally renowned musicians and also sponsor young Portuguese musicians. It is a non-profit organization and celebrates its twenty-fifth anniversary in April this year.
