NUNO MARQUES, piano

Award winning  Nuno Marques is one of the most sought-after Portuguese pianists of his generation.  Nuno has developed an extensive, international performing career from his current base in New York City, from where he also  directs Porto Pianofest  — an international piano festival held annually in Porto, Portugal.  He founded Porto Pianofest in 2016 and is the festival`s artistic director.  His excitement to support the new generation of pianists and bring the greatest musicians and mentors to his native country has brought this young festival  to quick international esteem.

Nuno is a versatile musician, equally comfortable playing solo, chamber music, teaching or collaborating with other forms of artistic expression. As a soloist Nuno  has performed with many international orchestras including the Orchestra for Myanmar, where he participated in a humanitarian project with young musicians from the Rohingya minority.

Nuno has been awarded prizes at piano competitions in London and Portugal. His studies have been sponsored by the European Union (Dfes), NYU- Reinhold Foundation, Fundação Gulbenkian and the AAMSL.

He now shares his performance activities with the role as Music Director of “Stars of American Ballet”, a dance company offering world class performances bringing together principal dancers and soloists from major American companies. In this capacity,  Nuno has toured Israel, Hungary, Portugal, and will embark on a tour through USA and Serbia in 2021.

Nuno Marques is passionate about traveling, literature and photography.

Nuno writes about the programme he plans to play for us, the following:

“ …..This is an adapted version of the program that I will play at the Portuguese Embassy in DC on November 18, and highlights master composers of Portugal and Spain, new and old, interwoven with their influences and those influenced by them.  I paired Scarlatti-Seixas, Liszt-Vianna da Motta, Freitas Branco – Granados , and 2 fados by Rey Colaco. And also a piece by my wife, which was influenced by the Iberian light and color.

The second program –  the Bach Partita no. 6 and Liszt`s Sonata in B minor –  is based on the deep human experience, especially relevant to these day –  two strong masterpieces I am very happy to bring to you in the Algarve.”
