PAUL CROSSLEY was born in Yorkshire, England, in 1944 and his musical journey began with the organ in Oxford’s Mansfield College. His first piano instruction was with Fanny Waterman who later founded the Leeds International Piano Competition.
In 1967 Paul was discovered by Olivier Messiaen and his wife, Yvonne Loriod, and was awarded a scholarship to study in Paris under them. In 1968 he won the first prize in the Messiaen Piano Competition. In 1973 Paul gave the world premiere of Tippett’s Piano Sonata No.3 in Bath and overnight achieved international recognition as one of the major pianists of our time. Since then Paul Crossley has given world premieres of works by a number of important modern composers including Takemitsu, Henze, Lindberg, Adams as well as Tippett. His discography of over 50 recordings include the complete solo works of Ravel, Debussy, Fauré, Franck, Janacek and other composers and many of these won major recording awards.
In 1991 Paul was made an Honorary Fellow of Mansfield College and in 1993 received a CBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List. To celebrate his 60th birthday in 2004 Paul Crossley gave a recital in London’s Wigmore Hall performing new piano works composed for the occasion by his friends and colleagues as a tribute to his lifelong commitment to contemporary piano music. As a duo-partner he has played with leading instrumentalists most notably the violinist Arthur Grumiaux. As a broadcaster he made a series of landmark television documentaries about 20th century composers. Paul played Messiaen’s Turangalila Symphony in the Proms. Two years ago Paul recorded Claude Debussy’s “The Complete Works for Solo Piano”.
