27 Years of Great Music !

To all Amigas/os, from Helga Hampton

December 1, 2018

Dear Amigos,

“Ce qu’on ne peut dire et ce qu’on ne peut taire, la musique l’exprime.”
Victor Hugo
“Music is what cannot be said – its what cannot be kept silent.” !

I love this quote, especially in the original French, and, yes, I know: inadequate translation. And yet, that is exactly what music is all about – it has a meaning beyond words. We need good interpreters, and didn’t we have a master here just now? Charles Owen spoke Bach and Brahms and Schumann the way I had never heard or understood them before. What a revelation !

December concerts: Now we are going to be treated to some chamber music by a larger force,
The Pangea Trio. We are lucky enough to welcome this Portuguese, French, Spanish trio at Os Agostos on Tuesday, December 18th and Thursday, December 20th, 2018 in a beautifully selected programme of music by Haydn, Delgado and Schumann, and then by Debussy, Turina and Vianna da Motta. I do not need to point out that this will be very popular – so PLEASE make your reservations very soon, make it NOW. Send an email to Cristina Palma at: and if you find that at the last moment you cannot come, cancel and liberate your seats, please.
THANK YOU !!! – says Cristina ! !

Second half of the membership year: We are approaching the end of 2018/19 season, as far
as our music activity is concerned. There is a lot more to come in the second half of our
membership year. Here is the Concert Schedule for your agendas.

February 26th and 28th:    Stephen Vanhauwaert , piano
March 19th and 21st:   Jeroen de Groot, violin, Bart van de Roer, piano
(celebration for Joop Carp*)
April 16th and 18th:   Katya Apekisheva, piano
May 14th and 16th:   Holger Groschopp, piano, Adele Bitter, cello
May 21st Paul Crossley: 75th Birthday Party, Amigos only**
June 11th and 13th: Alissa Firsova, piano, Daniel Rowland, violin

• The March concerts will be a Celebration of Joop Carp`s life. Joop, together with his wife,!
Dorris were among the original Amigos 25 year ago. Joop passed away in March 2016 and
with these two evenings of music by one of his favourite duos we would like to thank again for all the generosity and active collaboration with which he always supported the Amigos.
He was a particular donor for and supporter of our Young Music Students Sponsorship
project, the initiative Dorris continues to support.

** Paul Crossley, the great pianist, recording artist and broadcaster who was called “ of
music`s natural aristocrats” is also one of the Amigos’ favourite pianists. Paul has shared
his art with us for many years by performing at CCSL as well as in Os Agostos. He retired a
couple of years ago from his very active career, and when this birthday came along it was
the Maestro’s own wish to celebrate it with the Amigos. He has prepared a wonderful
programme of some of his favourite piano pieces to play for us. What a privilege
So we shall be honouring him with a Birthday Party on May 21st, 2019 at Os Agostos.
Mark the date well in your agendas.

And here another addition to the regular Amigo events of the present membership season.

We shall see the 2018/19 season out with a Party in Os Agostos on Saturday, June 22nd, 2019
This party will take place on the terraces of our “home” Os Agostos and what a feast it will be!
As a particular feature, our protégé Tiago Rosario, the young piano student who with our support is continuing his studies at the Musikhochschule in Munster, Germany, will play for us, thus showing us his continuing progress.

Please plan to come to this event – family and visiting friends will be welcome to this otherwise “Amigos Only” event. !

With this extra titbit, I wish you all a wonderful festive season and a smooth and
successful beginning of the New Year.

With best personal wishes and thanks for your continuing support and friendship. !
Helga Hampton
