Dear Amigos,
Here we are in the middle of January and it has hardly stopped raining for five weeks. It reminds me of the way it used to be in the late 1980s and one wonders when it will
come to an end. In the middle of it all, a couple of weeks ago, we were cheered up a little by our two concerts which were refreshing and very enjoyable. They were popular too, perhaps because of the combination of the innocent charm which came across from the musicians and the familiar pieces music they chose to play. The concerts were very competent, comforting, relaxing and rather charming.
We now come to one of the highlights of our musical year when on the 10th and 13th of February, our good friend Piers Lane will make a very welcome return visit to São Lourenço. He will have recently returned
from extensive tour of Australia and I cannot tell you how marvellous and generous of him to come back to play for us. We are going to hear two very romantic concerts, impeccably performed by a world class musician, to celebrate the bicentenary of the birth of Fryderyk Chopin. The first
concert will be entirely devoted to Chopin, but in the first half of the second concert we shall hear Schubert and Brahms to be followed by seven Chopin Nocturnes. As if that was not romantic enough, both concerts are to be performed by candlelight and there is every chance that they will go down in history as two of the most delightful evenings in the long and successful relationship between the Amigos de Música and the Centro Cultural.
2010 is a significant year in the history of the Amigos as it marks the first twenty years of our existence. To that end we thought we should push the boat out and celebrate in some style. A black tie dinner is being arranged for Friday 21st May at the delightful Relais & Chateaux Vila Monte near Moncarapacho. Those who attended the very successful beach side dinner at 2Passos last summer will remember how good it was to get together and how much fun we had. Several Amigos are also members of the Algarve Wine Society and may have attended one of their excellent presentations and dinners at Vila Monte in the past.
Arrangements are being made with the hotel so that anyone who might like to take a break and stay over-night will be able to do so at favourably negotiated prices. The date is fixed and further information will follow.
As is often the case, and in spite of our best endeavours, some of our concert dates have to change a little due to unavoidable circumstances. To keep you up to date the changes that have been made to the performance dates of Pål Lindtner Eide, and more particularly to those of the very brilliant Yevgeny Subdin (which will now take place on two consecutive evenings) are shown on our Concert Programme page
