The Statutes of the Amigos states that it should try to support the teaching of a young Portuguese Music student. During the long existence of the Association many an aspiring young person has been given a helping hand. One of the conditions is that our protégé should perform a concert in front of the members and this traditionally takes place immediately after the AGM.
Last Friday, now entering the second year of her well deserved support from the Amigos, the members were treated to a recital by Joana Ballmann from Lisbon. Joana is studying piano in Cologne and the Amigos were enraptured as she calmly ran through her programme of Brahms, Ravel and Beethoven. Joanna once studied ballet and also the cello and flute.
The night of the Annual General Meeting of the Amigos has always been a bit special. After the serious business of the evening is over this is usually followed by the concert when there is the opportunity to hear the progress of the Amigos’ protégé. This is then followed by a simple but sumptuous supper when
the Amigos are the guests of Marie Huber and the team of
the Cultural Centre as a way of thanking the Association for underwriting the majority of the musical activities which take place there. A more ideal partnership would be beyond belief.
