TIM HUGH, CELLO & KATERINA NAZAROVA, PIANO & VIOLIN.  On Wednesday September 5th., 2012 Tim and Katerina will play pieces by Kodaly, Bach, Bruch and Glasunov. On Saturday September 8th. there will be music by Ravel, Ysaye, Britten,  Fauré, Rachmaninov & O’Connor.  Some of these will be solo pieces.

 

Tim Hugh studied at Yale with Aldo Parisot and later with Jacqueline du Pré whilst gaining his MA in Medicine and Anthropology at Cambridge. Following his success at the Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow Tim went onto a very successful international career as soloist as well as being Principal Cellist with the London Symphony Orchestra (LSO).  He has worked as a soloist with

many of today’s great conductors including Previn, Haitink, Sir Colin Davis, Rostropovich and Menuhin. Among his many recordings as a soloist Tims’ Bach Suites are regarded as one of the best modern cello performances.  Hugh has performed at the Promenade Concerts at London’s Albert Hall. As a chamber musician he plays with the Nash Ensemble. “Hands on Heart” is a a recent recording in memory of his brother Steve featuring a live performance of the Kodaly Sonata.  In recent years he has toured the UK playing Elgar and Brahms concertos with the Moscow

Philharmonic and in Spain with the LSO and has given recitals in Dubai, Beirut, New York and elsewhere.  Tim plays on a cello by Giacomo Zanoli made in Venice in 1743.  Tim is making a welcome return to the Centro Cultural.  For more information see www.timhugh.co.uk

Katerina Nazarova has just won the String Final of the ABC Symphony Australia 2012 Young Performers Awards, which is regarded as Australia’s most prestigious classical music prize. She goes on to the Stage 4 Grand Final on October

4th.  Katerina was born in Tasmania and began playing the violin and piano at a very early age and made her solo debut at age 11 on a program broadcast nationally. She continued her studies at the Royal College of Music in London where she won the RCM Concerto Competition. Katerina performs regularly with the London Philharmonic and the London Symphony and other orchestras and ensembles such as the Cosima Piano Quintet. In 2008 and 2009 Katerina was invited to work with Lorin Maazel for performances of Britten’s chamber operas and has also played in Washington’s Kennedy Center.

Concerts at the Centro Cultural São Lourenço begin at 7.30pm sharp.  Doors open at 6.30pm and wine and lemonade is served from 7.00pm.  During the interval wine and canapés are served. The AMIGOS is an international group of around 100 members who support the musical activities at the Centro Cultural. The AMIGOS celebrated its twentieth anniversary in 2010.

 

OCTOBER 2012 CONCERTS. Constantin Sandhu, piano, will give concerts on Wednesday October 10th. and Saturday October 13th. 2012.

The Centro Cultural is located next to the historic Church of São Lourenço, near Almancil. Lisbon’s famous Sãomamede Galeria de Arte has an exhibition of paintings and sculptures at the Centro Cultural at present (see www.saomamede.com/).
