Newsletter: May, 2015

Dear Amigos,

The intention of this letter is to remind us all of the various events still planned for the remainder of this 2014/15 Amigos Season – wish I could also remind the appropriate authority that it is now the jolly month of May and we are ready to add the outdoor part to our celebration of life and entertainment. Will it not be wonderful to congregate on the great Os Agostos terraces again before our concerts ?

The first chance for that will be soon:

Tuesday, 12th or Thursday 14th, May 2015 – same programme!!! at 19:30

Lucy Parham brings her programme “Réverie” based on the life and work of Claude Debussy. This British pianist, known to the Amigos from the 2 earlier programmes of Schumann’s “Beloved Clara” and Liszt’s “Odyssey of Love”, will be accompanied by the stage and film actor Tim McInnerny as narrator.

“Réverie”- Debussy brought to life in words and letters, received its London premiere in the Wigmore Hall in London to critical acclaim. “The music in Parham’s programme was chosen to reflect the mood of the letters and this it did with great success. Her playing superbly covered the musical bases, from the lazy opulence of “Soiree dans Grenade” to the glacial chill of “Des pas sur la neige”, from the tintinnabulation of “Pagodes” to the chaste beauty of “La fille aux cheveux de lin”. More press notices: “Lucy Parham is no ordinary pianist, she has the ability to get inside the personality of the composers which enables audiences to share the experience.” Lucy says: “Debussy’s legacy is immense. “Réverie” features a number of his piano works, but it was his entire output that set the course for the century which followed him. Discarding outworn rules, he forged a new and liberated future for classical music.” We are in for another treat.

When making your reservation, PLEASE NOTE, the two evenings offer the same programme.

The June concert dates are fixed for Tuesday, 9th and Thursday 11th, June 2015 at 19:30.

Holger Groschopp, piano, and Adele Bitter, cello, are both from Berlin – he, the habitual keyboard player of the Berliner Philharmoniker, and she, the Principal Cello of the Berliner Stadt Symphonie. They will bring us a wonderfully varied programme. Be prepared for excellence.

However, this is not the end of our year: The Grand Finale, and at the same time our celebration to welcome the summer and in addition pay tribute to our charitable endeavours, is planned for:

Sunday, June 21st, 2015 with a GALA DINNER at Os Agostos

Ana Beatriz Ferreira, our sponsoree and post graduate piano student at Royal College of Music in London, will give us a pre-dinner recital. The cost for the evening will be € 65 p.p. and all proceeds, net of expenses, will go into the Amigo Young Musician Sponsorship Fund. This is an Amigo only event – but guests of Amigos are welcome – and detailed invitations will be sent in good time. Mark the date.
