FOR IMMEDIATE PUBLICATION    SEPTEMBER 2018 CONCERTS            26.08.2018

ANDREY GUGNIN, the charismatic young Russian pianist, will give the opening concerts of the Amigos’ 2018-19 season. Andrey was born in 1987 and has been involved in music since he was seven. He was eager to become a concert pianist and studied with Olga Mechetina, Valery Kastelsky and later with Prof. Vera Gornostayeva at the Moscow State Tchaikovsky Conservatoire. He continued his studies at the International Piano Academy Lake Como.

Andrey has won many prizes in international competitions. In 2013 he won the 2nd prize at the Ludwig van Beethoven International Piano Competition in Vienna. The following year he won the Gold Medal and the Audience Award at the XVl International Gina Bachauer Piano Competition. Then, in 2016, Andrey won the 1st. prize at the Sydney International Piano Competition taking the accolades for best overall concerto, best 19th. or 20th. century concerto, best violin and piano sonata and best preliminaries within one recital. Piers Lane, who has played for the Amigos on several occasions – most recently in March 2018 – is the Artistic Director of this competition in Sydney.

Gugnin’s versatility puts him very much in the spotlight as a recitalist, chamber music partner and a soloist with orchestras in more than 20 countries. In Japan’s Okayama City his 2016 recital so motivated the public and the organisers that, soon after the concert, a festival for chamber music was established – the Takebe-cho ChamberMusic Festival – Gugnin and Friends.

Andrey is very much in demand as a studio artist. His recording of concerti by Shostakovich was used on the soundtrack of Steven Spielberg’s Oscar winning film Bridge of Spies.
