WORLD PREMIERE OF AZEVEDO’S TRIO FOR CLARINET, CELLO & PIANO

The World Premiere of Sérgio Azevedo’s Trio for Clarinet, Cello and Piano took place at the Centro Cultural São Lourenço on Saturday March 16^th., 2013. It was played by the Trio “A Piacere” and was enthusiastically welcomed by the audience.

Sérgio Azevedo is Portugal’s most famous present day composer. He was born in Coimbra in 1968. Sérgio initially studied composition at the Academia de Amadores de Música with Fernando Lopes-Graça (1906-1994) and completed his advanced studies in composition, graduating with the highest classification, from the Escola Superior de Música de Lisboa, where he worked with Constança Capdeville.

Sérgio wrote the Trio for Clarinet, Cello and Piano in memory of Constança Capdeville, probably his most influential teacher. Constança was born in Barcelona on March 16^th. 1937 so the premiere of this Trio was on the 76^th. Anniversary of his birth. Constança was born in Barcelona and settled permanently in Portugal in 1951 due to constraints raised by

the Spanish civil war. He was considered one of the most notable figures in contemporary music in Portugal. He died in 1992.

The Trio “A Piacere” is led by Nuno Silva, clarinet, and consists of Catherine Stryncx, Cello and Daniela Ignazzitto, Piano. Nuno is Portugal’s first Clarinet Master and studied under Sérgio Azevedo. Sérgio has won various composition prizes and his works have been commissioned and performed throughout the world by some of the most prestigious musicians such as Artur Pizarro. Sérgio teaches composition at the Escola Superior de Música

de Lisboa. He has published 2 books and contributes articles to the New Grove Dictionary

of Music and Musicians. Sérgio collaborates with RDP’s Antenna 2 classical music station.
